Stuyvesant High School Reviews

This school is amazing. The students are all very smart and even those who receive low grades ace the standardized tests (SAT II's, SATs, PSATs). Most of the teachers are really good and/or very knowledgeable in the subject for which they teach.

It is the best school in the entire NY Region. It tops the list in every category to rate a high school in AP classes taken, awards given, percentage going to college, graduation rates, Intel STS finalists, etc. It's location in Tribeca also places it in the cultural center in the most diverse city in the world, not only are the kids smart, but get a well rounded view on issues affecting every day people all over the world.

At Stuy, every personality had an outlet. The atmosphere fostered by the school encourages everyone to do their best, not to try to be the best. The teachers were awesome and the only place I've ever understood physics was in Ms. Nolen's class.

Both teachers and students take great pride in their school. The school is located on the Hudson river near Statue of Liberty. It is so inspiring just to look outside of the window. The school is clean and orderly, and conducive of learning. The school work is challenging, yet students still have time to think for themselves.

It's like a museum. Once you walk in there's so many things that catches your eyes: the 6th floor library, and its wooden plane; all the boxes that are spread across the halls and classrooms; the 1st floor and the 1/2 floor; the atria (1, 2, 3, 5th floors); the faculty is amazing; and the students are truly the best. I wouldn't transfer out even if they had to drag me by my arms.

It's really clean and sparkly and made of marble. They have some of the best teachers here and some of their classes are really distinct and interesting - but thanks to budget cuts, some of these classes are only available for only one section or just straight up not available.

I sent two children to Stuy - it is the most well rounded school in terms of diversity of curriculum (both humanities and science) as well as student body. The extracurricular SING is amazing, there is an opportunity for students to write and direct one act plays, and perform in many different kinds of musical venues. The Spectator is a student run newspaper that is truly student run - perhaps even better than many college newspapers. Overall, Stuy provides for many student interests as well as supporting excellent academics.
This review was posted by a parent.

teachers and staff care about the students and they help students to hold positive atitute towards learning. There are a lot of extra curriculum activities. There are a lot of communications from the school and I feel very connected with my son's learning. It is a cool school.
This review was posted by a parent.

Stuy is different from other high schools in that no matter how different you are, you can find friends. People are so much less inclined to make fun f others and the atmosphere is centered around academics, with many diverse clubs and teams. ;) I dont even mind my travel time to my school.

My daughter likes the school very much eventhough she has to get up 5:30am in the morning. The school gives her a lot of opportunities that she will not find in other competetive high schools. She met many friends who work hard accademically. There are many strong teams(Maths,Speach & Debate, Swimming, Volley, Bssket, Football,Tradk, etc) in the school. I'm very please that my daughter can get in this school.

Tremendous academic and social support for students by counselors & staff. Teachers are willing to go above the call of duty to help students. Learning is cool & so are most of the students. For kids who have always received good grades by barely studying, Stuy is a place they learn how to study and how to prioritize.

Stuy is filled smart kids who are recognized by their (usually) great teachers. Everyone at Stuy may be competitive, but they are also very friendly and most teachers are always willing to lend a hand. I've met several people in Stuy who hav made a profound influence upon me, and I will always cherish my memories with them. All in all, my time at Stuyvesant High School was a most unforgettable experience.

Stuyvesant was - and still is - the 'Harvard' of the NYC public school system and it is much harder to get admitted to Stuy then it is to Harvard. Still love it for its great students, of which quite a few are still interested in pursuing careers in the sciences, medicine and technology, and of course its storied history as being the 'incubator' of some of the finest minds and creative talents in American history and culture for well over a hundred years.

It's an awesome school, full of good teachers and smart/helpful students. I'm in Baruch right now and it feels like a breeze after Stuy! If funding has to be taken it shouldn't be taken out of the most elite school in the city (if not state). I feel like Stuy really gives gifted students a chance to shine and it needs its budget to accomodate the 3,000 students, teachers, and many cool different programs/teams/etc. it has.

My sons are having an amazing and wonderful experience at Stuyvesant. I'm so jealous. But I could not be happier for them or happier about the school.
This review was posted by a parent.

Stuyvesant is the best thing in the entire New York City public school system because it provides students who wouldn't otherwise be at top high schools, because of economic means, the chance to compete with those who are and learn just as much. I am currently at Harvard University and miss Stuyvesant very much and will be eternally thankful to Stuy for getting me where I am now. If it is unable to support itself financial in future years, it will be a devastating loss for New York.

Our child loves this school! The other students are of the highest level and keep one another challenged, competing at the national level in chess, math, debate and more. The caliber and dedication of the teachers is outstanding, too. Imagine having a high school chemistry teacher with a Ph.D. from Columbia! The parents are an involved bunch, as well, and participate in the school's activities whenever needed. Principal Teitel keeps everything humming smoothly. And, let's not forget the magnificent physical plant...a state-of-the-art building with top notch labs and more.

Stuyvesant has students of great potential and intellect. However, with the recent budget cuts, they are not able to pursue their talents as effectively as before. As a result of the cuts, classes are oversized, electives are not offered to all students equally, and there are not enough guidance counselors to effectively deal with the student body.

Stuyvesant is a prestigious high school, but at the same time it is fun. There is a variety of classes, but I would love to see many more electives of math, science, history, and especially English. Even though there is a lot of homework and every student must work hard to get good grades, the teachers are nice and helpful, and the student community is very kind. I always know where to go to get help, and I love Stuyvesant!

Plus the facilities are amazing.

I've always appreciated the wide selection and availability of classes offered at Stuyvesant High School. Recently however, I've learned that my younger siblings who are currently in attendance have been prevented from taking certain classes because of recent budget cuts that have limited the sizes of advanced courses. It would be a shame for dedicated students to lose their opportunities for personal advancement because of financial issues.

Considering we're a public school that provides a better education than many elite prep schools, we need the funding to help level the playing field.

Our reputation precedes us. I didn't realize how good it was until I started talking to people who went to other high schools outside of NY. The teachers are almost universally fantastic, and there's an in depth set of classes for any interest. Our graduation speakers put other schools' to shame.

Stuyvesant is truly a great high school. There is a real sense of community throughout the school, despite its largeness. Academics are top-notch. Students are engaged in their studies and are actively involved in classroom discussions. Classwork and homework are challenging and encourage each student to realize his/her potential. The variety of courses given in each subject area help students decide which course of study is best for them. The parent coordinator is very involved in all aspects of the school, gives great advice and is always available to help. Stuyvesant is a wonderful learning experience that prepares our students for college and other challenges they may face in their future.

But most impressively it has many students who are economically unprivledged, first generation immigrants, some of who did not even know english when they came to this countryl; yet they frequently achieve at an equal or higher level than their peers in private schools do as a result of the free public education they get at Stuyvesant.

A hothouse for hard-working, motivated students who thrive on challenges. A school where it's cool to be brainy and the superstars are top students. Lots of great teachers. Cons: badly overcrowded, large class sizes, students obsess about grades and scores, culture of cheating, admission solely by one test, few black students make it in indicative of chronic academic disadvantage over years. To succeed in this highly competitive environment, students must be self-motivated, disciplined and well-organized. Great preparation for competitive colleges! Curriculum could use updating in some depts. and some academic rules are counter-productive.

The school also has very good communication with parents and I always know where to contact an administrator for help. I know it's safe and it is also very beautiful. This school is certainly one of the best.

There's just so much to experience at Stuyvesant, is there something that Stuyvesant doesn't have? There's so much diversity and tons of different kinds of people, just about anyone can find a friend. It's busy at Stuy, but the hard work is all worth it.

Yea sure the stress is extremely high, but at the end of the day, you end up having tons of friends and having learned a lot of things. Students are very nice to each other (no bullying at all), learning environment is great, and tons of extra curricular activities. Most teachers are great, allow student to learn themselves and discuss almost anything. My hat goes out to Stuyvesant High School

Stuyvesant High School is considered to be the most prestigious high school in NY and one of the best in the US. Being a student there, I can say that Stuy is truly a great school. The facilities are so nice and the building is clean and organized. All of the teachers are so kind and although some of the work may be intimidating, we learn so much by the end of the day. Homework may seem like a lot, but its a decent amount that will really help us review what we've learned. Socially, it's impossible not to make friends at Stuy, being there are about 3400 students currently attending it. Everyone is so friendly and the first day of school I made about 20 friends. Stuy also offers hundreds of clubs and sports teams which can satisfy anyone's interests. So overall, Stuy is awesome and totally deserves this prize.

Stuy is just a really nice place to be in. It's clean and organized, people are friendly, and it's a good environment to learn in. That's what all schools need. This isn't even mentioning the clubs or electives that this school has to offer. The options are unlimited.

Stuyvesant High School is a challenge, but it's not a challenge where you're struggling, rather, it's like a challenge where you meet friends who are trying just as hard as you are. This is why over 2000 students come every day to do their best and have fun.

Stuyvesant is a great learning environment! The teaches challenge you to do the best you can, while at the same time they are caring and alert to the fact that everyone gets a large amount of homework. This is not your average high school. We are the top ranked high school in New York City.

I live across a high school, literally. if you look outside my window, you'll see the front entrance and students usually sit on my lawn. Instead, I chose to go to Stuyvesant even though it takes me an hour and a half to get there, and an hour and a half to get home. Why? Because the environment here is the absolute best for learning, the teachers actually care, and we have so many teams and clubs that it's insane. In the good way.

This is the best school ever. Amazing school that literally puts the college experience into a high school setting. Students here do not want to leave the school at all and are found around the clock on campus. With an amazing amount of extracurriculars, the community is tightly knit. The academics are top notch since it's a specialized high school. The teachers are passionate about their work; they love the subjects that they teach. They will go above and beyond the call of duty to help students in need. Classes provide an unique experience that resembles the experience one has in college classes. The students here love working and are competitive. Grades are amazingly high. SATs are considered laughable; a grade below 2000 is considered a flop. Quite a large percentage of the student body end up in big name schools like Harvard, MIT, Yale, and Brown to name a few. However, although we are some of the biggest 'nerds' of all time, we know how to party. Rarely does one see a senior student conga line in their school go around and greet all 10 floors of out school. Rarely does one see the innumerable events students host on their own time. And rarely does one see such an amazing principal: Stanley Teitel. He is not just a principal, but a friend that students adore. Students are not afraid of him - we conside him as a friend and mentor. As the leader of the greatest school in the world, Stanley Teitel surely deserves something in return.

Stuyvesant is such an excellent school -- I look forward to going there every morning. All the teachers are superb and try to help their students as much as they can, even if it means staying after school to re-do a lab for an elective. Because of budget cuts, some of the best teachers left, which is at most a disadvantage. Also, at Stuy, there is an innumerable amount of clubs/pubs, and if there isn't one that fits your tastes, you can make one yourself! In brevity, Stuyvesant High School is the epitome of any school that goes great lengths to serve its students.

Stuyvesant was an exceptional school far more advanced than most I've seen. With a multitude of class offerings from potery and robotics to multivariant calculus and human disease, I received an unparalleled education. The state of the art facility in Lower Manhattan also allowed for a miriad of after school possibilities, other than extracirriculars at school, such as exploration of Chinatown and Bowling Green, or just playing handball in Battery Park. With that being said, Stuyvesant H.S. was the greatest and no other can compare. STUY '06!

With a diverse student body, Stuvesant offers countless cultural and social events, whether it be a concert with heart-warming music, or cultural festival with many different foods. Stuyvesant High School is the Number 1 public school in New York City, and for a very good reason, too.

Stuyvesant is a school that rewards the hardworking children of New York. Because the students want to learn, the range of classes is much greater than that of many other schools. The teachers are, for the most part, brilliant and inspiring (I say, knowing that I would not be where I am now without them). Perhaps the most rewarding thing about Stuy is the environment - students want to learn and are willing to work, and because of that Stuyvesant does amazing things that are apparent from the Math team to the Fencing team. I want Stuy to have the funding to give other kids everything it gave me.

Stuyvesant is a school for intellectuals--a place where students don't need to dumb themselves down to fit in, and a place where everyone competes with themselves, tests their own limits. It's a melting pot of immigrants and legacies and standard Manhattan-ites, drawing from all five boroughs to create an educational experience that is vivid, rewarding, and diverse. They bring the best of both worlds, with history and English departments as rich and successful as their science and math departments. Some of the best learning takes place at this school--they have amazing teachers and amazing students. This is the best high school in New York (most certainly) and is definitely a contender for top high school in the United States.

I haven't seen any bullying of any sort, and besides superior academics, my school offers so many teams and clubs and programs to join. Truly the best high school anyone could ever attend.

Best Public School in the city. I went from Bronx Science to here. At Bronx Science, everyone talks trash about Stuyvesant, but no at Stuyvesant really cared much of what anyone else thought of them. I guess when you're at the top, there's no reason to look down. The staff were all veritable experts in the classes they taught, especially for Advanced Placement courses, of which Stuyvesant had the highest number offered compared to any other public high school. The student body is also a lot more serious about education, but there's still a lot of fun to be had in and out of class. The connections I made here and the knowledge that was passed around will be useful for the rest of my life.

I have only good things to say about Stuyvesant. Both students and teachers are incredibly intelligent, bitingly witty, and, most importantly, genuinely caring. It's a notoriously hard school to get into (and get out of) and, for this reason, the feeling of camaraderie was palpable; we knew that we were all in it together. Big Kudos to Stuy for giving me 4 of the best years of my life, and completely shaping me as an individual.

We're a high school and we get escalators. How cool is that? But honestly, Stuy is great for the large variety of regular and AP courses it offers--9 foreign language classes, 5 science AP's, 7 social studies AP's, and a plethora of art and technology classes. Plus, we're ranked number 1 in NYC!

Stuyvesant High School is a wonderful place because of the students. As it is considered one of the best schools in the country (a title that I do not think is undeserved) it attracts a caliber of student that is unrivaled throughout other schools in the country. In my four years at Stuyvesant, I've met people who will go on to be become leaders in the sciences, the arts, politics, and numerous other fields.

This school has prepared me for life in so many ways that I would never have thought was possible in just four years. Stuyvesant was challenging, yes, but I definitely would not be the person I am today if I had not attended this high school. Here, I learned not only the knowledge that specialized schools teach, but to be a leader and learned how to build things with my own hands and watch my creations grow. My school has hindered me but it has also pushed me to my high school limits and expanded my horizons. My high school experience is one that I will never forget.

Stuyvesant is a world of its own. Our high school boasts an exceptionally large amount of students, only befitting our humongous school, with its ten floors. The quality of learning, with no exceptions is, to say the least, greatly unique in its outstanding excellence, undimmed by the other schools that are green with envy at our amazingly stunning expertise at exceeding expectations of a NY public school.

I owe a lot to Stuyvesant. At Stuy, I really matured a lot. I took classes with great teachers, studied with some of New York's best and brightest kids, gained leadership skills working with ARISTA (the Stuy chapter of the National Honor Society) and other service organizations, and became a better person in general. Although some regard Stuy as having a sink-or-swim attitude, I found this was really not the case. Stuy's support system is great and the guidance department was great. Teachers also took the extra steps to make sure their students learned, but had a good time doing it, including addressing personal issues. Although I am now a sophomore at Dartmouth where I am very happy to be at, I miss Stuyvesant and wish that I could have soaked in more of what it offered, despite being busy almost everyday with school work, extracurricular activities, and the like. If I were given the chance to have the Stuy experience all over again, I'd take it in a heartbeat. Really, I owe a lot to Stuy and just cannot thank the school enough.

this school is great not just because of the teachers or the facilities but the people who attend are the best people in the world. and if you make it to this school you will find that you are among them. another great thing about this school is that the administration trusts the students and they are free to enjoy themselves while not betraying that trust

Stuyvesant is supposedly a math and science school, but the English department is what really makes going there worth it. Each teacher has their own style and biases but they're all focused on helping you appreciate the material the same way that they do and letting the differences that eventually arise spark discussion, whether it's between students or the teacher and the class.

My school, Stuyvesant High School, is the #1 science school in New York. We are known for our briliantly talented students and diverse teams. Our beautiful school building overlooks the Hudson River and allows for a spectacular view of New York City. Inside our school building is equally as beautiful with ten floors, each oriented to a particular subject. Students are popular for being academically well-rounded rather than being the best dressed or most attractive. Stuyvesant High School has an amazing community and I'm happy to be part of it.

As an alum and current Columbia University student, I can safely say that Stuyvesant provides exemplary faculty who are passionate about passing on to the next generation their wealth of knowledge and experience. Many of Stuyvesant's student body aspire to become great and maximize their potential. However, financial constraints have always hindered this by preventing them from challenging themselves in AP classes. Why should we stifle New York City's best? They will be the next leaders and administrators of the world, and will continue to make New York City great.

I am a recent graduate from Stuy. I love that my former school understands that its students have so much potential do great things in life and have proved so; therefore they do everything they can to try to get opportunities and to make us well-rounded kids whereas other schools tend to waste money and put it towards things like construction (which ends being unfinished anyway)instead of trying to improve the quality and availiability of opportunities for their kids. My experience at Stuy had its good and bad, ups and downs, probably like any other student, but I think I speak for many other alumni when I say that we couldn't have been who we are today without the Stuy experience.

Also, I absolutely love how much effort my school puts into making sure that all of its students get into the colleges and universities that they want to get into. My school really does prepare its students for the college application process from freshman year. They make sure we take challenging classes and all of the faculty really know what they're talking about. I also love the atmosphere at my high school. There is no fighting and a thirst for knowledge is encouraged. No one is belittled for caring about their grades. In fact, we all care about our grades. We are there for our friends. If there is anyone we don't get along with, we just avoid them. We don't start a fight with them the way many students in other schools do. No one brings weapons to school, so I always feel safe.

Stuyvesant High School is the best. It has great teachers and great students. It's located in a very nice community, and right near the Hudson. Stuyvesant has the best opportunities for every career you can think of. It is truly the best high school!

Variety of choices of not only classes that challenge you, but also extra curricular activities. An amazing, stimulating atmosphere. Best. School. Ever.

Stuyvesant has a lot to offer as long as you reach for it. There are, of course, the many classes and APs offered but even more than that, but there are countless extracurricular activities one can find. The student body is packed with bright and talented students and it really is a privilege to attend such a school.

Amazing amount of resources and wide variety of classes and extracurriculars.

Stuyvesant High School is privileged, but that's because the students are all the more willing to go the extra mile for academics. They say that something is as good as it's weak link and the thing about Stuy, is that everyone is the best of NYC so there isn't a weak link among us.

You meet tons of nice people in Stuyvesant and it actually makes going to school fun. Commuting to Stuyvesant with a bunch of friends also adds to the list of things I look forward to during weekdays. This school's learning environment is also great and they offer a bunch of extracurriculars.

This is a statement I heard often, and it is true. What makes Stuyvesant so different from other schools is its students. Some of the teachers are absolutely amazing, others not so much. Students at Stuyvesant aren't afraid to be active in class and be involved. Many of them are extremely intelligent and gifted, and it was a blessing to be in that sort of environment. The administration, however, is not always understanding to student needs.

It's amazing. The teachers are all pretty intelligent and there are a variety of classes that you can choose to take. There's an equal opportunity for anyone who works hard to keep up their grades.

I had a wonderful education at Stuyvesant. I developed my love for learning, was constantly amazed by my talented peers, and was inspired by amazing teachers.

We are new to this school and everyone so far (from the students to the teachers to the parent coordinator to the Principal) has been extremely friendly and helpful. The building has state of the art facilities and the academic expectations are high. I am also impressed that the arts and sports are considered an important part of each child's education.

Going to Stuyvesant was the best decision I ever made. The students are some of the brightest people I have ever meet and the classes I took at Stuy were more rigorous than those I took at my Ivy League university. Those four years were incredibly intense, challenging, and rewarding, and truly shaped who I am today. I would not trade them for anything.

I'm an alumni of Stuy, and I still find that my 4 years there have really shaped who I am today. It is not just a school of intelligent, fun, good humored classmates, but it has been inspirational and encouraging of different experiences and viewpoints. Going to Stuy is one decision in my life I would never wish to take back.

I received an excellent education there and would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn in a competitive environment. You will be sure of going to college when you graduate.

This is a phenomenal school for the bright minds who appreciate not just learning, but building a strong foundation of knowledge that someday may lead to scientific discoveries worthy of a noble prize.

AMAZING!! If your child is bright and lucky enough to get in, don't think twice about it. This place is academically superior and offers so much. My child is a senior and I do not see the competitiveness as a problem. My child's friends don't even discuss SAT scores or averages. Stuy has made my child well-rounded and accepting of all. I wish every child could be given the gift of a Stuyvesant education.

The best school that I have seen. My 4 years here have been the best of my life.
This review was posted by a student.

Wonderful. period. My son attends this school after he tranferred from an NYC boys' school so he could focus more on the sceinces and technology. This school is amazing. The SATs are higher then that of his former boys' school and my young daughter's girls' school. Stuyvesent has great extracurriculars and, for a sciences school, has an exceptional music & drama program. Athletics are not close to being strong except the school's high academic standards make up fore that. My only complain is the classes are large ranging from 30 to 35, whereas my son's former school had 12 students to a class---it's a little struggle except all good since the nationally high SAT average score at Stuyvesent shows that the large classes don't really have an effect at all. Shows that some public education is top-tier, and this is comming from a NYC private girls' school graduate.

This school is probably the best school in all of NY. My son who attends gets excelling grades and the teachers, principal, etc. are very solid. My son has both entertainment and education in one day. It has great courses/classes and excellent clubs/ extracurricular activites! Overall, this school has a lot of good qualities to offer.

This school may be the best in all of NY. It provides a solid education with excellent teachers for all subjects. Many parents help throughout the year!

The quality and quantity of academic programs available at Stuy are unsurpassed. Students tend to participate in many extracurricular activities on top of challenging academics. Many of the clubs, like speech and debate, are among the top ranked in the country.

This school is the best. It is very competitive, best high school education you can get of no price. Being very competitive means that students are very talented and that this is a challenging school.
This review was posted by a student.

Great school with many talented and smart kids. Drawback is that the school is extremely competitive. Parental involvement is limited as many parents are immigrants and don't speak English. This is not a huge problem as the students are pretty self-motivated and self-sufficient.
This review was posted by a former student.

Quality of academics is very strong with dedicated teachers; lots of extra time and work on part of teachers. Electives include many arts and music class options.

great school, nice kids, very competitive
This review was posted by a parent.

Academics are top notch and students are selected via the specialized school placement test. This institution is truly a testament to the American dream. Electives are numerous in all areas. Standard English courses were a little weak on reading content as might be expected for a math/science school, but not 'bad' by any means. Starting new extracurriculars was possible, but I had to strongly motivate my club's co-founders to cut through the red tape for funding. At least everyone's eager to put the money to good use, which is nice. Enrollment in AP courses is competitive, and college admissions are made more difficult by being alongside such a high achieving clientele. Overall, a great experience, but parental support is necessary to help your child cope with the extremely rigorous curriculum.

The academics are unsurpassed at Stuyvesant High School. The facilities are newer than most, a plethora of extracurriculars are available, and there is a good cross-section of students from all walks of life with one thing in common: intelligence. Students are required to take an entrance exam for admission to this public school, where many forgo lunch periods in order to fit addtional science or music classes into their schedules. There is a high level of parent involvement, and the PTA is a driving force within the school.

Something that may not be clear about Stuyvesant or any of the NYC Sci-Hi schools is that these schools represent the best gathering of intelligent teenagers who could or would not attend private school. There are excellent teachers in all, especially Stuyvesant, but ultimately it's not the teachers or the amenities of these schools that make them such great places. It's the kids themselves, rubbing shoulders, shedding their big-fish-small-pond mindsets from whatever other public school they came from. In some sense, these schools sit on their laurels because the hard part's already been instilled in the students. They're nearly all competitive, either naturally so or bullied into it by their parents, or their natural intelligence lets them glide through. These schools are ideal havens of learning, but they're much harder for the undisciplined. Parents are obliged to push your kids if they've had too easy of a time until now.

Academic programs are top notch; lots of music, arts etc., parents are totally involved and they should be...this is one of the 6 specialized nyc public high schools and kids test for over 6 hours to place a seat here.

This school has challenged my son for the past two years. He has had the opportunity to be challenged in the classroom by both the teachers and the students. It has been a real honor.

THe quality of the programs at SHS is above and beyond any expectations. They have a very challenging acedemic program and also offer a nice level of arts, sports and other extracurricular activities. The parent contact is mutual and can even be kept up to date on line.

Stuyvesant provides an excellent environment for learning, with a range of available resources unlike any other NYC public school. Students interested in the humanities shouldn't be turned off by Stuy's math and science profile, as the school has an extensive array of english, art and social studies classes and electives. The extracurricular offerings are unbelievable, ranging from a robotics club to literary magazines to over 30 sports teams. Parental involvement is good and the Parents' Association is very helpful in raising money for the school. Needless to say, students at this school are very well prepared for college.

Stuyvesant High School is an incredible school, not only academically, but socially as well. There is great diversity in the student body, and a healthy competitive spirit that pervades the school and pushes all students to excel. Graduates go on to excellent colleges and universities. I have heard that students from Stuyvesant are often deemed by college admissions offices as on par with those from some of the nation's most elite private schools.

The breadth of classes is extensive at this competitive high school. A full complement of music, drama, and sports are available for participation by the students, as well as a number of student clubs. The quality of the students makes the difference at this school, as they tend to be a highly motivated group. Kids who are not as motivated (regardless of how intelligent) will likely not do well at Stuy. The approach is more like 'sink or swim' than anything else. The parents association is fairly active, and most parents seem involved in their child's educational progress.

There is an unbelievable number of activities in the school. The kids there are very social and the myths of teachers not helping students isn't true, not from my experience.
This review was posted by a student.

Stuyvesant High School may well be the best public high school in the country. With an intensely competitive admissions process that accepts around 5% of the 15,000 students who take the specialized high school exam each year, the creme de la creme of NYC's public school attend Stuyvesant. Students are described as hard working, keenly competitive, and constantly push themselves to outshine their peers. This makes for a very intense academic environment, but as an alumna, I don't know a single member of my graduating class who isn't performance-oriented and looking to achieve.
